似た熟語表現 - 「関する、関して、etc.」

 英語には、「関する」、「関して」などのような意味の熟語表現が何種類もあります（例えば、"with (またはin) regard to"、"with respect to"、"in relation to"、"in connection with"、"in conjunction with"、"relating to"など）。ここでは、そのうちのいくつかについて説明します。

with regard to：

 基本的に、文中にある場合は「〜に関して」または「〜に関する」、文頭にある場合は「〜に関しては、」と訳します。（文章の内容があまり固くない場合は、「〜に関して」の代わりに「〜について」、「〜に関しては、」の代わりに「〜については、」が使えます）。

たとえば、

The Board on Health Care Information advises the Department of Health and Family Services with regard to the collection, analysis and dissemination of health care information.

の場合は、「〜に関して」と訳します。

[試訳]
「健康管理情報委員会」は、健康管理情報の収集、分析、および配布に関して、「保健・子育て省」に対する助言を行う。

また、

With regard to personality, Sigmund Freud defined "id" as the subconscious area of our persona which maintains our instinctive biological needs and urges us to eat, to sleep to urinate and so forth.

の場合は、「〜に関しては、」と訳します。

パーソナリティに関しては、ジークムント・フロイトは、「イド」を、人間の本能的な生物学的欲求を維持する、つまり、食事、睡眠、排せつなどを行うように人間を駆り立てる、我々のペルソナの無意識領域として定義した。

with respect to：

 「〜に関して」または「〜に関する」と訳しますが、普通の「関する」と、「〜を中心（または基準）とした」という数学的な意味での「関する」の2種類があります。

 たとえば、

The City of Boston does not make any warranties or representations with respect to the content, quality, accuracy or completeness of any information or materials contained on the City of Boston web server or through links to other servers..

は、普通の「〜に関して」の例です。

一方、

A graph is symmetric with respect to origin if, whenever (x, y) is on the graph, (-x, -y) is also on the graph.

は、数学的な意味での「〜に関して」、「〜に関する」の例です。

in connection with

「関する」とか「関して」という意味で使われる場合もありますが、一般には、「〜に関係（関連）する」、「〜に関係（関連）して」、「〜との関係（関連）で」などの意味で使われることのほうが多いようです。例えば、"The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrested three men in connection with an armed robbery."なら、「警視庁は強盗事件に関与した3人の男を逮捕した」となります。

"In connection with his research, he has co-authored two software packages."なら、

「彼は研究を行うかたわら、2つのソフトウエア製品の製作に代表者の一人として携わった」ということになります。
